This is a rare instance where I can’t completely agree with Kerry Washington. Sure everyone on this show is brilliant, but I feel as if the backbone should be Olivia Pope. Disagree or not, there would be no Scandal if it were not for the fixing aspect of the show that the main character built her career on.
This tweeter went on to say that she "agree[d]. Bt given there is only ONE show w/blk female lead on tv, main reason I watch, I want 2 c OP b gr8, not pushed aside. "
I was trying to put my finger on what feels different about this season for me, and she managed to articulate it before I could. I miss the boss Olivia Pope. The hard-walking, hard-hitting Olivia who didn’t take shit from anyone. She was allowed to be vulnerable, in crazy stupid love, and still be an intelligent problem solver. I understand the concept of character growth, but you can’t grow a character right out of their personality. It’s disingenuous.
I saw someone say that everything can’t be about Olivia which I also don’t agree with. For example, there was The Closer, one of the most successful cable shows with a female lead. The Closer deviated to supporting characters, but all roads always led back to Brenda Lee Johnson. It was clear that without Detective Brenda Lee Johnson solving cases like she did, there wouldn’t have been a show called “The Closer.” She experienced growth, turmoil, and change just like Olivia, but the writers never changed her so much that the audience didn’t recognize her anymore. Brenda still made criminals cower and confess right up until the last minute of the show.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that it is completely possible to focus on secondary characters without completely abandoning the main character’s story arc, personality, or driving desires. Olivia doesn’t have her fire anymore. I don’t know if that’s because she’s doubting her decisions; if she so in love with Fitz that she leaves her entire personality by the wayside, or what, but I hope the writers give the fire back to her.
all of this. thank you.
